Fossil Formations of coastal South Carolina
South Carolina has gone through many changes over millions of years. Global warming and Ice ages are natural processes the earth goes through. Through these processes the world's oceans have transgressed land masses. Millions of years ago, South Carolina was covered by the sea inland as far as the state capital of Columbia. During these changes marine and animal fossils are deposited, then covered over by these changes. The below chart represents the fossil formations that may be found in the Lowcountry of South Carolina.
